WCS strives to create a learning environment supported by a “team” composed of the teacher, the parent and the WCS school administrator. We operate on the assumption that we all want what is best for the student, even when that is not what is most pleasant. To that end, we commit to, and solicit open, mutually respectful communication.
Conferences:
Conferences are regularly scheduled twice each academic year. These meetings between parents and teachers provide regular opportunities for feedback on a student’s performance and an exchange of information.
Special Conferences:
Special Conferences may be scheduled whenever WCS believes there are concerns that must be addressed in person with parents. Both parents are expected to attend “special conferences.” WCS will try to schedule such meetings at times when all teachers working with the student can attend. These meetings may be called to address emotional or social development, as well as academic progress.
Other Meetings:
Other meetings should be scheduled with the student’s teacher in advance. Parents are discouraged from seeking “conferences” with their student’s teacher in the hallway or at the classroom during the academic day, as this distracts the teacher from classroom teaching duties, adversely impacting the whole class.
Classroom Visits/Observation:
Classroom Visits/Observation may be arranged for parents by scheduling a visit in advance through the School Administrator.
Questions:
Questions from parents are welcomed, either addressed to the School Administrator or the student’s teacher. During the academic day, please leave messages for the teacher in the WCS office, or send a note with your student. Teachers will respond during non-class hours.
Monday Folders:
“Monday Folders” are a regular, weekly source of communication from students’ teachers. Parents are expected to review the contents of this folder every Monday evening, sign appropriate papers and ensure the folder is returned by the student the following school day. There will be a weekly newsletter included each week. This is a reliable means of getting a note to the student’s teacher.
Medications:
Medications that must be administered during the academic day, should be delivered by a parent to the WCS office, with detailed instructions for dosage and time of administration.
Communicable Illness:
Parents are expected to notify the WCS office immediately if their student is diagnosed with a communicable disease (like chicken pox, measles, mumps, or other communicable diseases). We also ask that you inform the office if your child has contracted head lice.
Classroom Teacher Assignments:
Placement of students is made after careful evaluation of several factors. It is not always possible to accommodate specific assignment requests from parents. Parents are requested to give their input on placement of their students on an enrollment planning form distributed each spring.
