Testimonials

Kindergarten at Kirkland Children's School is a place for children to expand their love of learning, their general knowledge, their ability to get along with others, and their interest in reaching out to the world. Our kindergarten paves the way for a successful transition from preschool to primary grades by offering a program designed to encourage your child's physical, emotional and intellectual growth.

Language Arts
Our philosophy of beginning reading is to incorporate phonics, literature oral and written instruction into a meaningful context. We utilize Rigby's Literacy by Design, a researched-based program for emerging and developing readers. Our program guides students through important skills and strategies while building knowledge and abilities so that reading and writing become integral parts of the kindergarten day. Low teacher student ratios allow us to individualize teaching so that students are encouraged and supported.

Kindergarten at Discovery Oaks Academy

Our Kindergarten program provides a full-day experience focusing on enriched reading, language, and math skills.  At Discovery Oaks Academy we use the Rigby Literacy program beginning in Kindergarten. It is the latest research-based literacy program founded on guided reading strategies and the tenets of balanced literacy with phonemic awareness and phonics as critical components. The program is designed to help students of varying abilities, backgrounds, and experiences to becoming successful readers and writers. Program materials are flexible enough to be used in a variety of ways with a variety of students.

Description

GUIDED READING

What is Guided Reading?

Guided reading is an approach where the teacher works with a small group of students who can all read similar levels of texts and demonstrate similar reading behaviors. The text (developmentally appropriate books called leveled readers) should be easy enough for students to read with a teacher’s support. The approach recognizes that a wide range of reading abilities exists within any grade level or age group, and that reading at the appropriate levels ensures success. The teacher monitors and guides the reading of each child as needed. The text should offer challenges and opportunities for problem solving, but also should be easy enough for students to read with some fluency. Each session, 15 to 25 minutes, begins with the teacher introducing a book, eliciting prior knowledge, and building background.Discussion of the book follows, and the child keeps the book to read repeatedly.Subsequent lessons at the lower levels usually use an entirely new book.

The goal of Guided Reading is for students to become fluent readers who can problem solve strategically and read independently and silently.
