Dress Code

The very nature of Wynnbrook Christian School demands that we be concerned about the image we project. All students should take modesty and good taste in dress into consideration. To uphold the Christian values we represent, dress at school must be modest at all times.

School uniforms accomplish several positive goals. They (1) create a sense of community by ensuring the simple attractiveness of the student body, (2) reduce a family's clothing expenditures, (3) instill students with discipline, (4) help the school environment become less competitive and more focused on learning, (5) reduce stress at home in the mornings when choosing what to wear, and (6) encourage students to express themselves in creative ways other than through their clothes. The Wynnbrook Christian School dress code helps encourage everyone to focus attention on what is inside a student rather than on superficial, outward appearances. Hopefully, the greatest emphasis will be placed on character expressed in the fruits of the Spirit.

Students are required to arrive on campus properly and neatly attired. All students are required to follow our mandatory uniform policy. Dress that may cause a distraction to the educational process is not allowed. Uniform violations may result in a student being asked to return home for proper attire.

Contact the school office if you have any questions regarding the WCS dress code.

A. Uniform Dress and Grooming Code

The Uniform Dress Code policy must be followed during the official school day Monday through Thursday. Unless otherwise notified, Fridays are Spirit Days. Acceptable dress for Spirit Days is specified below. Specific uniform dress (cobalt blue or red shirt with logo) will be required for field trips.

Boys

a. Clothing should follow the mandatory uniform dress code.

1) All shirts must have collars and must be cobalt blue, red or white. One cobalt blue and one red shirt with the WCS logo must be purchased through Lands End. All other shirts should be logo free unless they are adorned with the official WCS logo. Wynnbrook Christian School’s Preferred Customer Number with Lands End is 900096520. You may access the Lands End website at www.landsend.com or call 1-800-963.4816.

2) Boys must wear khaki pants or shorts. Pants or shorts must be clean cut like those shown in the Lands End catalog. Shorts must be no shorter than 3” above the top of the floor when student is in a kneeling position.

3) All shirts must be tucked into pants or shorts. If a shirt is too short to be tucked in, it is too short to wear to school.

4) All pants and shorts must be worn at the natural waistline. No sagging allowed.

5) Shirts worn under uniform shirts must be solid white.

6) Clothing should not show excessive wear.

7) A brown or black belt must be worn with pants or shorts with belt loops.

8) White socks are to be worn with shorts.

9) Solid color coordinated socks are to be worn with long pants (black,
brown, khaki, white.).

10) Shoes may be tennis shoes or hard-soled shoes. Tennis shoes must be basic canvas or leather—predominately white or beige in color. Since solid colors may be hard to find, tennis shoes may have touches of red, white or royal blue accents. No lights, pumps, neon colors, sounds, skate shoes, “mood” or “color changing” inserts. Hard-soled shoes must be black, brown, tan, or navy with closed toes and heels. “Merrell” style shoes in these colors are also acceptable. No boots of any kind, clogs, “Crocs”, sandals, or flip-flops.

11) If an outer coat or jacket is worn, it must be predominately solid cobalt/royal blue, red, navy, khaki or white. Any outer wear to be worn throughout the day in the classroom must be in the school colors (solid red, white or cobalt blue). See Lands End for possible styles. No denim jackets are allowed.

12) Hats and caps are not allowed inside the school building.

b. Hair is to be maintained so that it is not extreme. Hair must be clean, combed, and neat in appearance.

1) Designs may not be shaved or dyed into the hair.

2) No cuts or braids which may appear extreme or attention getting are acceptable.

3) Hair must be conservatively trimmed so that it does not hang in the back below the top of the dress shirt collar on the side below the middle of the ear and in the front below the eyebrows.

c. Visible permanent or temporary tattoos are not allowed.

d. Body piercing jewelry and/or makeup is not allowed.

e. Fingernails will be clean and trimmed so they do not extend beyond the fleshy portion of the fingers/thumbs.

f. Fridays will be Spirit Days unless otherwise notified. Students may dress in jeans and WCS spirit shirts. Jeans should be clean cut free of adornments. Spirit shirts include WCS logo t-shirts from Lands End, WCS field day shirts, WCS AR Star shirts and spirit wear previously purchased through WCS.

Girls

Young ladies at WCS are asked to think seriously about their dress. Dress and grooming are forms of communication. We convey non-verbally our values and personal taste through such means. There are two terms that express our philosophy for female students: modesty and good taste.

a. Clothing should follow the mandatory uniform dress code.

1) All shirts are to have collars and must be cobalt blue, red or white. One cobalt blue and one red shirt with the new WCS logo must be purchased through Lands End. All shirts should be logo free unless adorned with the WCS logo. Wynnbrook Christian School’s Preferred Customer Number with Lands End is 900096520. You may access the Lands End catalog at www.landsend.com or order toll free 1-800-963.4816.

2) Bottoms must be khaki pants, skorts, skirts, capris or shorts. Khaki jumpers are also permitted. Choose clean cut straight styles. See the styles in Lands End catalog as a guide. No ruffled hems or fringes on skirts.

3) Length of dress, skirt, skort or shorts must be no shorter than 3” above the top of the floor when student is in a kneeling position. Be attentive to the tightness of the garment. This often affects the appropriateness when sitting.

4) Khaki, navy or white shorts must be worn under jumpers or skirts unless tights are worn. Tights must be solid colored and coordinate with the overall uniform; i.e., white, navy blue, red or flesh colors.

5) All shirts must be tucked into pants, skorts, skirts, capris or shorts. All
shirts should be long enough to tuck into pants, skorts, skirts, capris or
shorts. If a shirt is too short to tuck in, it is too short to wear to school.

6) All pants must be worn at or slightly below the natural waistline. No hip huggers allowed.

7) Shirts worn under uniform shirts must be solid white.

8) Clothing should not show excessive wear.

9) A conservative solid brown, black, red, cobalt blue or white belt with buckle must be worn with pants, skorts, skirts, capris or shorts with belt loops. (Red, cobalt blue or white buckled belts should match shirt.) No sashes, scarves, or beaded belts are permitted.

10) No leggings.

11) White socks are to be worn with shorts or skorts.

12) Solid color coordinated socks are to be worn with long pants. (Choose navy, red, white, or beige.)

13) Shoes may be tennis shoes or hard-soled shoes. Tennis shoes must be basic canvas or leather—predominately white or beige in color. Since solid colors are often hard to find, tennis shoes may have touches of red, white or royal blue accents. No lights, pumps, neon colors, sounds, skate shoes, “mood” or “color changing” inserts. Hard-soled shoes must be black, brown, tan, or navy with closed toes and heels. “Merrell” style shoes are acceptable in these colors. Red “Mary Jane” type shoes are permissible. No boots of any kind, clogs, “Crocs”, sandals, or flip-flops.

14) If an outer coat or jacket is worn, it must be predominately solid cobalt blue, red, navy, khaki or white. Any outer wear worn in the classroom during the day must be red, white or cobalt blue. See Lands End for possible styles. No denim jackets are allowed.

15) Hats and caps are not allowed inside the school building.

16) Hair bows/bands should be red, white or cobalt blue.

b. Hair is to be maintained so that it is not extreme. Girls’ hair must be clean, combed, and neat in appearance.

1) No cuts or braids which may appear extreme or attention getting are acceptable.

2) Hair should be styled so that it stays out of the eyes and does not interfere with school work.

c. Visible permanent or temporary tattoos are not allowed.

d. No more than one earring per earlobe. For safety reasons, we suggest ear jewelry that does not extend below the earlobe. However, if longer earrings are desired they can extend no more than ¼” below the fleshy portion of the ear; no other body piercing jewelry is allowed.

e. All make-up is deemed inappropriate for young WCS girls. Fresh, clean and wholesome looks are most desirable.

f. Fingernails will be clean and trimmed so they do not extend beyond the fleshy portion of the fingers/thumbs. Conservative, light or natural polish is permissible.

g. Fridays will be Spirit Days unless otherwise notified. Students may dress in jeans and WCS spirit shirts. Jeans should be clean cut, free of adornments. Spirit shirts include WCS logo t-shirts from Lands End, WCS field day shirts, WCS AR Star shirts and spirit wear previously purchased from WCS.

h. Specific uniform dress (cobalt blue or red shirt with logo) will be required for all field trips.
