Academic/Program Standards

Grades:

Students are expected to earn their own grades; parents should refrain from doing their children’s schoolwork for them (including “projects”).

E 100
S Satisfactory progress (70 and above)
N Unsatisfactory/failing (below 70)
A 90 to 100
B 80 to 89
C 70 to 79
F Below 70

Note:  Music, Art, P.E.  and Spanish will be graded using S or N for grades K through 4th.

Progress reports will be sent home midway through each nine week period.

Report cards are sent home at the end of each nine week period.

Homework:

Homework reinforces and supplements classroom instruction. Teachers will plan for homework assignments that are reasonable for the student’s grade level. Homework will be designed as additional practice, exploration, and/or and extension of class work. Parents should provide their students with a suitable setting in which to complete assigned homework and require them to complete it on time, without doing it for them. This fosters responsibility, self-esteem and industriousness in the child. Children whose parents feel the need to do their children’s homework for them often spawn feelings of inferiority and inadequacy.

Extra Credit:

“Extra Credit” is not available as a means of raising a student’s grades. The student’s performance in graded classroom work, homework and tests, which are available to all members of the class are the sole basis for assigning grades. Students who are doing poorly in any of these areas will have their performance reviewed by teacher and parents, with the objective of identifying study or test behaviors needing improvement.

Textbooks:

Textbooks are the property of WCS and will be used by successive classes. They should be handled with care and kept free of marks except the student’s name in ink inside the front cover. “Consumable” workbooks are provided for students to write and mark in. Students who damage, deface or destroy textbooks or other school property will be required to replace the damaged item(s).

Assignments:

Students are encouraged to ask questions if they don’t understand the assignment. Parents should encourage their students to ask questions to clarify the assignment, rather than asking the parent to intercede with the teacher.

Makeup Work:

Students who miss classes must make up both class work and homework. Normally, the student is allowed the same number of days to make up the missed work as he has been absent. In cases of extended absence, parents must confer with the teacher to determine a schedule for make up.

Parents should call the WCS office by 9:00am to request assignments for that day’s absence. The assignments will be delivered to the WCS by 2:55pm.Requests for earlier delivery of books and assignments will not normally be accommodated, in order to minimize disruption to the teaching schedule.

Testing:

Testing occurs in grades 1 – 5, using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, administered in the spring. Students’ performance will be compared to that of other students across the country, in the same level or grade. Test scores will be used to improve student performance by identifying areas for additional emphasis.

Awards:

Awards are given each quarter when report cards are distributed. Students are recognized with High Honors, Honors, Character Traits, Special Class Awards, and a variety of subject-specific awards. Perfect Attendance, Most Improved Student and the J.O.Y.*(Jesus, Others, then You) awards are given at the end of the school year.

*One student in each grade level will receive the J.O.Y award, which recognizes students for putting Jesus first in their lives.

Academic Probation:

Academic Probation is announced each quarter when report cards are distributed, for any students failing in one major subject and has a 75 or lower grade average in another major subject. The “probation” period will last the entire following quarter. At the end of the probationary quarter, these students’ grades will be reviewed and a decision made about their status.
